/** 20 years of WebStollen
It seems like it was yesterday when the founders of WebStollen met in 2001 and decided to do something with web design.
Florian Barbian already had experience with print design and created his first designs and flyers for acquaintances and friendly companies, Michael Stepanek really wanted to put websites on the net, which he implemented with Microsoft Frontpage.
Start-up phase:
Tech Stack: HTML – Frontpage – Corel Draw
Together with another school friend, the three of them founded their first company in the garden of the company’s first headquarters, grandma’s house.
The name of the company should sound kind of cool, but not just English. But it should also carry the mentality of the founders, so it was WebStollen born. The Stud symbolizes the hard work, always on the ground and not aloof, so the small company should contribute to the financing of the studies.
In the beginning, it was websites for regional companies that the team brought to life via HTML.
Later, the first ebay templates were added, and sales on ebay were just on the rise.
Some of the first customers are still with us today, such as fischfuttertreff.de, whose founder first started selling his fish food and aquarium accessories on ebay.
Getting started with e-commerce:
Tech Stack: HTML – CSS – ebay – Templates – OsCommerce
E-commerce was still in its infancy, Amazon was hardly noticed in Germany, so the first customers approached WebStollen and wanted to sell their goods via their own online shop .
At that time, OsCommerce was the only relevant online shop system that could be adapted by the user, as the source code was freely accessible.
With a lot of passion and heart and soul, the founders, who were now only the two of them, dealt with the topic of online shops and took their first steps using osCommerce.
Among the first customers were beatnuts.de, a local shop for snow and skateboarders, and again fischfuttertreff.de.
The first milestone towards becoming a professional company was the move into the first rented office space in the port of Regensburg in 2006. Together with a budding architect and a financial professional, an office flat share was promptly founded.
First office, first employee:
Tech Stack:
HTML – CSS – Macromedia Dreamweaver – Fireworks – PHP – MySQL
All the furniture was built by a carpenter friend, the rest of the equipment came from auctions and office liquidations.
Soon the first employee was hired, another milestone and a growing responsibility that now had to be shouldered.
WebStollen now consisted of 3 colleagues, all of whom sat in a 20sqm office space.
In 2008, the current office space in the old Customs house at the entrance to the harbour oriented. The historic building with its roof truss and wooden beams was a unique opportunity, as WebStollen was allowed to help decide how the rooms would be built.
The two-storey area created a completely new feel-good climate in which the ideas of WebStollen could gradually be developed.
It quickly became clear that osCommerce was not sufficient for professional requirements. Selling goods requires product management, warehouse management, invoicing, and much more.
From 2010 onwards, it was clear that there would be no way around JTL
Tech Stack: + JTL-WaWi – JTL-Shop – Photoshop
In 2010, while searching for a suitable solution, the JTL-WaWi (eazyauction) with an attached JTL shop was discovered.
As a result, efficient online trading was suddenly possible, especially via ebay and the company’s own online shop.
The simple and cost-effective entry of JTL software made the decision easy for the existing WebStollen customers.
WebStollen soon became an official JTL service partner and has been on board since the introduction of the service partner program.
Already at the first service partner meetings in Cologne and Hürth, close partnerships with other JTL service partners could also be established, so that to this day every meeting among service partners resembles a friendly class reunion.
Since then, WebStollen has fully dedicated itself to e-commerce, supporting online retailers and developing innovative apps (Deurag Insurance, Concordia Insurance, dash.bar, Ortholutions).
This, and thanks to the rapidly evolving team, enabled deep insights into the field of e-commerce and agile software development, which from then on defined the DNA of WebStollen.
Linking these tech worlds was an obvious choice, and to this day the company continues to work every day to develop powerful and reliable software for innovative customers.
The search for new and supportive services for online retailers has soon led to close partnerships with well-known companies from the e-commerce industry.
WebStollen today
